1993, 50 x 60 x 1 inch, acrylic on canvas with painted edges, St. Charles studio, Detroit, Michigan.
This is an overpainting of an earlier piece entitled, “Help!”, where the letters filled the canvas. After staring at it sitting in my studio for weeks I envisioned what became this finished work. Originally, I had used “Zip A Tone” rub down lettering (now obsolete) to place random words and phrases throughout the piece. As time passed the lettering fell off. It didn’t matter, because it was so small that unless one closely observed the piece you couldn’t see the words. I’ve found, as have most artists, that these type of things are convenient mistakes or happy errors that result in something better than planned. There is pleasing movement, balance and color that I find creates interest. When it was exhibited it was hung at an angle so the head was not tilted, resulting in the piece appearing to be an unequal sided diamond. Since, I have decided it works better when viewed as pictured. What do you think?
